As Jimmy mentioned we were photographing this Merlin for about an hour on sunday. Plenty of time to play with different flash settings and such , also waiting for it to do something interesting. This is a strange wing stretch the Merlin did.Flash as pretty much main light .

Lovely bird and very nice pose, very good flash work, for my taste I would prefer -1/3 on the flash, but not a nit!!!, excellent detail and as a horizontal it would have been very nice as well!! Congrats!! 8)

Ian,

A better BG this time. Love the tail under the wingstretch. This image looks a little flat to me, the flash left no dept. You can see this in the stump. anyway, still an awesome image of a tough bird to get close to.

The head turn and wing strech make this one for me.

Very nice!

I can't believe that you had such a cooperative merlin, especially for an hour. They normally don't sit for more than a couple minutes. He must have just finished a meal and was just basking in the sun. That stretch is called a "warble" by falconers. Great Capture, wish it were mine!

Must have been tough just waiting for this pretty bird to do something. That's about as tough as I like my days. :)
