Wood Duck Aix sponsa

I hope you all aren't getting tired of our duck images. Sheri and I have such a great time sitting on the bank of the local duck ponds and watching the various species go about their business. Sometimes we even think to take photographs of them. :)

This was taken a month ago at a local neighborhood park in downtown Littleton. Same park that the rest of our Wood Duck images were made. Overcast sky.

10D, 600/4, tripod.
Eval @ -2/3, Av @ f8, SS 1/250, ISO 400.

Comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks for looking. :)

Bill,

A very nice duck in soft green water, love the "drip" and detail. Well done.

Bill, I think overcast skies are the best for this species as you have presented here. this is an incredible photo. The detail and colors are amazing. The water drop puts it ovet the top. This also makes a killer vertical headshot.

Beautiful shot of a great woody. The water drop really adds to the image.

OK...that's it....we're taking your new 10D away....you have gotten too good too fast with this.....and the ducks seem to be swarming you and Sheri for their pictures to be made.

This one is awesome....the colors are spectacular....the water looks like something EJ sent you and the droplet of water takes it over the top...and me over the edge. Oh how I've wanted a chance at a wood duck....I'm lucky to spot them 100 yards away and with duck hunting starting this weekend I'll never see one again....except for all that are posted here. So...get busy and post some more.

I like this a lot, but FWIW my eye wants a tad more room at the bottom. I agree it would make a terrific vertical head shot.

Wow. I think this is fantastic, Bill. The water drop, range of colors, and patterned water are gorgeous. Very, very nice. :)

I prefer this horizontal crop, background is too delicate to waste :o Feather detail here is excellent for this specie. Many times Wood Duck feather detail is 'plastered' by direct sunlight, flash, sharpening or all of them.

This one is a jaw-dropper. Love the irridescent colors around the eye, not an easy thing to do. You have discovered that overcast skies work well on the Woodies and your choice of underexposure (-0.7) is what I usually use for a drake. Am I tired of seeing your ducks? I wish we could see more and I share Lana's enthusiasm for you and Sheri's recent duck posts. Keep em' comin. :D

Hi Bill!

The color and detail on the duck are awesome. Love the BG and the water drip. The comp is the only thing I'll nit. Agree with others that a vertical would be nice and also wishing for a bit more room below.

I have found many of my comps to be off when using the center focus sensor (almost always as the 2x rarely comes off my lens) when the bird is big in the frame. Especially when using servo AF. I much prefer to shoot in one shot for more comp control when the action isn't too fast.

Keep up the great work Bill!

Bill, this doesn't look like a Picasso to me - much more like a Whala. Stunning shot.

Bill:

You and Sheri are really ripping it up with your duck posts. Each one is nicer than the last. And this one is perfect. The duck is increedible and the background is too.
I wish I had this photo as reference years ago when I was painting my wood duck decoy. You have captured the colors on this guy perfectly.
