Ring-billed Gull

I went on the Vanishing River Cruise on Lake Buchanan, Texas with my wife, grandson and his wife on Sunday.

I had a little luck trying flight shots of various birds, then someone started feeding the gulls some crackers off the back of the boat.

I got a lot of practice shooting flight shots and have an even greater appreciation for all those great flight shots we see. I had a lot of partial birds in the frame, some chopped wings, some out of focus, etc.

The unfortunate part of this shot and the rest was that it was near mid day. We didn't have a choice on when we went, so I made the best of what light I had.

I was also happier than I have been with the 10D & 100-400IS combination.

This is about a 10% crop.

10D, 100-400IS @ 400, ISO 400 @ -2/3. No flash, handheld.

Thanks to Brian for the correction on the ID.

Jim, this is nice. You handled the light well with good exposure and detail. I wish the Gull had turned his head just a bit more so we could see an eye. The black one-sided border throws this off balance a bit for me. Could crop a bit off the bottom.

The way the gull is looking straight at the camera makes me want to hold my hand out and see if he will alight on my finger.

I love the size and position in the frame. Sharp and well detailed as well. :)

A very competent capture. The only thing I'd like would be a slight turn of the head.

Very nice flight shot. I just can never nit any good flight shot as I know how hard they are to make. You made the most of your situation and did very well.

This is a favorite subject of mine. Very cooperative. I wonder what it would look like if you rotated the left wing lower and/or flipped it horizontally? :)
