Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis)
Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach, FL, on 8 Jun 2002

I was searching for bitterns and gallinules. Looking straight at this group of leaves, I saw nothing. Suddenly I heard the typical loud “kek kek kek” squawk of a bittern, and an open mouth and partially extended wing appeared. Having broken camouflage, this female was lucky I was only a photographic predator.

Least bitterns also make an even more distinctive low-pitched, rumbling “ku ku ku” sound, but not with their mouths open this wide.

The leaf vein running through her open mouth is my major nit, but it’s also part of the camo.

With wetness on the foliage one might have expected the 400DO IS lens to produce the large, log-on-end, OOF highlights that have been seen to occur. I have owned the lens for 18 months and have noted this aberration only twice. Others have encountered it more often (?EJ). I continue to be pleased with the sharpness and functionality of the lens and still use it as my workhorse despite my acquisition of a 500 IS.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques and reposts welcome.

She looks somewhat disenchanted by your intrusion. Very good image. The angle is just a bit high but that goes withthe turf at Wako.

Harvey, she was about two or three inches above camera level.

Sandy,

I like the rusty red and green tones in this, the tongue is an addition as is the open wing and the water droplets. Many many nice elements, well done!

I love the colors and the action. The open bill and visible tongue always put a smile on my face. :D

Great action....complete with tongue and partially extended wing. Amazing how they can go from a stealth mode to screamer mode. Great job!!

Another Wako hidden jewel of a bittern!!!
I am still in awe that I have not seen Wako yet!! Incredible!!
Wonderful as always with excellent fill in flash !!
I wish Nikon made a 400DO lens, handheld shooting for flight shots would be a breeze , I am amazed about the quality of that lens!!!
Congrats!! 8)

Sandy,

Love the complimentary BG colors. The intensity of her scream is captured magnificently. Well done as always.

The tongue off in space is the highlight but the askew wing is nice as well. (Also like those little water drops.) Technically on target as usual. Only thing that confuses me here is the shadow (?) on the nearest leaf.

You can almost hear her yapping at you. :D

I don't even mind the vein behind the open bill. This is wonderful.

I can almost hear her squawking. :) Terrific shot and I love the expression on her face. She really does blend into the foliage here!

Sandy, I really like this and did not notice the leaf vein until you mentioned it. Those are some big leaves!
