I like to crop, but normally I would not remove more than about 25% of the image at most. In this case I was shooting some habitat shots. While examining the image in my browser I noticed and particularly liked this sandpiper and reflection particularly when I noticed the catchlight in the reflection. This crop is somewhere between 30% and 40% of the full frame. It seems a little soft but not too bad. what do you think?

Doesn't appear soft to me and I don't see any degradation of the image from the crop.

The image hels up pretty well for such a severe crop.

The image doesn't look soft to me. The light looks soft but that's fine. Very nice!

Well done, perfect exposure and awesome reflection... Held up pretty well to severe cropping. Nice work.

This works well for me--I love the reflection. My only nit would be on the upper right edge-on a level close the head of the bird there is something dark (presumably pond crud) that is a bit distracting.

Very nice Neil. There is some noise visible in the dark OOF band at the top but its so minor that it is not really worth worrying about. I too love to crop images and have found that crops like these are possible if your technique is good. This shot clearly shows that. The catchlight is so important in this one.

Still gives you more pixels than with the D30! Looks good to me.

Neil:

This is very nice. It's not soft on my monitor, but is is a bit gritty. If you reduced the noise this would really sing.

Neil, this is so good. I would clone out the little floating element just left of the foot and the little dark bit on the right edge about 1/3 down. a little USM would give it more punch. sweet shot.

The image is fine. Some selective cloning and noise reduction would bring it up even more.

Sweet image, Neil. I agree with mild noise reduction (which always softens an image) followed by USM.

I like this one very much.....especially complete with the catchlight in the reflection. I'm impressed that you normally do very little cropping....I on the other hand have a great deal of cropping in my images. This held up very well although there is a little noise that can easily be corrected.
