Redknobbed Coot, Fulica cristata, Rondevlei NR, South Africa, October 2002, Eos 3 + 400/5.6L + tripod, Sensia 100, full frame, usm

Coots are usually quite cooperative, this one as well. They are also difficult to expose with their blacks and their white shield. It's only because I've had plenty of chances to pratise on our European Coots that I knew more or less how to handle this exposure.

I hope you guys like it.

Cheers

Peter

Exposure is good as is the balance of the image. I don't know if it was possible but I would have liked the angle just a bit lower.

An interesting looking Coot. Nice shot - a lower angle would be a benefit if possible.

Your previous exposure experience and the use of Sensia resulted in a very nice exposure of this coot. Sensia seems to allow more range between the darks and whites than Provia or Velvia. I agree with the lower shooting angle suggestion but I know that's not always possible.

Very nice!

Monique, I am packed and ready to go, I may not look like much but I am well behaved and can grow on you like a fungus, with no cure for it!!!

Peter, Besides the lower shooting angle, I would clone out the light elements in the water. Nice photo.

Peter,

Nice pose, I would try adjusting the gamma a bit to put a bit of detail in the solid black areas. Difficult exposure on Cootes with the deep black/bright white. Nice red top!

You have some nice detail which might be brought up a little more. A lower angle would be nice but I know that it often isn't possible. I agree...they are a difficult bird to shoot with all the black and the white beak. You did a nice job with this one.
