I made another trip to the fish hatchery a couple of hours from my house. There was heavy fog that didn't lift until around noon. Once the fog lifted I discovered 3 Horned Grebes...the first that I had ever seen. I spent the better part of the day with them. I am fascinated with grebes and have found that they have a definite pattern in working a lake. The problem is that they can cover a lot of ground with each dive and it's hard to judge where they will come up. It was impossible to get all 3 in one picture and was hard to isolate just one. I shot this from my car as that's about the only way I've been able to get them.

This one came up....almost under my nose and the only time that they really got close. I just cropped a little from the top and would have preferred having more room at the bottom but I'll take it. It was also taken right after noon....not the best time to shoot but it was all that I could do.

Canon 1D, 500mmL IS, 2X TC, 550EX (shot from car)
ISO 320, ss 1/800, f/14, EV -2/3, flash -2
Photoshop - slight crop from the top, USM, levels

Very nice Lana. It is fun when they come up close and you have to work fast to get the shot. You certainly made the best of the light here, noon or not this is lovely.

Anyone who can get a good shot of any of the Grebe family does well in my book!! they are so tiny and elusive.

Well done Lana!

It doesn't matter when you took this, it still looks great! And is a whole lot better than any of my Horned Grebes. Nice work getting the shot at all. :D

Who says you only get good light in the early morning or late afternoon? This really is great no matter what time of day it was shot. The crop and placement in the frame look fine to me.

You did very well with this one!!

Very nice shot. Do they stay around in breeding plumage times?

I wish they did but unfortunately they are just migrating through. I'd love to see one in all it's color and splendor.

Lana,

Excellent image. The flash worked great to eliminate any shadows caused by the noon time sun. I love the eye on these guys. It adds a nice spalsh of color to the image.
