Brown Pelican
Gulf Coast – Florida

The angle is a little steep – I was on a pier and got as low as I could. A number of pelicans were quite curious about us which provided for some opportunities to photograph these interesting birds.

Digital capture with Nikon D1
Sigma 300mm f/2.8, handheld
Exposure manually set at 1/800, f/5.6
ISO 200

Image comments/critiques appreciated!

Wonderful , Heather - great detail , sweet and artsy pose :) Really good to see you posting! These are the coolest birds, and having never seen one, I am enjoying this motif challenge.

I like the image. Your conversion left the colors very natural but I think the image would be enhanced by a slight curves adjustment to enhance the colors.

These guys are so pathetic looking (I mean like a puppy dog). He looks like he is saying "give me fish". ;) Very nice photo.

How can you resist that "pitiful" face. You captured a cuteness that these pelicans have that is rarely seen.

Very nice. :)

Great shoot. I love the pose and the lighting is terrific. I too think that a little curves tweak and maybe a touch of saturation would make this sing. Though I am looking at it on a laptop at the moment :)

Hey Heather,

I agree it does look a bit flat, but it's a nice image of a cool bird .. It's always nice when a photographer can impart a sense of emotion in their subject .. "coy" describes this wonderfully.

Cheers

Glad to see that you had a little time to post....I know they must be keeping you extra busy now. This one has a very nice pose....actually has a "cute" look to him. I think a little more contrast might help but then I've never been great at making that decision....too much or not enough. Nice job!

Heather,

Very nice shot. You captured the attitude of this guy very well. I agree a little more contrast would make it pop.

It's not hard to find Pelicans in Florida :) . While the angle is just a little steep it doesn't really hinder the image.

Very nice! I don't think the angle is too steep for this bird and pose. Looks very natural.

Nice to see a pelican in the water shot. Hard to do in San Diego from the tall cliffs. The head turned slightly toward you takes it up a notch.
