Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata

This is one of four images I made yesterday at Belmar Park that were underexposed by 1-1/3 stops. I had my exposure compensation at -2 from shooting silhouette shots a couple nights before. When I realized what had happened, I almost deleted the shots. I decided to keep them and see what I could do with them.

Prior to conversion from RAW to TIFF, I used the BreezeBrowser feature of exposure compensation and adjusted it to +1-1/3. This is the result. Not to make a big deal about digital vs film but this would have gone in the trash if it were shot on Provia.

Not the greatest shot in the world but I thought it was worth saving, IMHO. :D

10D, 600/4, 1.4X, tripod.
Eval @ -2, 1/1000, f8, ISO 200.
BreezeBrowser conversion @ +1-1/3

All comments and critiques are welcome. Thanks for looking.

...which brings up all those Q's I need to ask in Digi forum. :) This is suberb detail. I've never seen one of these and the angle of this one's beak certainly shows the difference in a grand way. Good work!

Bill,

A very nice Shoveler, the silky green water compliments the bird. Selectivly lightening the left side of the head would put detail in the shadows.

Well you are kicking my butt on the female Shovelers. I have plenty of decent male shots but always seem to have trouble getting close enough to the girls (story of my life  ).

Ms. Calabash looks wonderful, deep rich colors due to the underexposure, digital does offer a wider exposure latitude in comparison to slide film, Great image and excellent colors to boot!!! Congrats!!! 8)

Very sweet though I wish there was a bit more light in the eye. I like the comp and the green water.

Colors and comp are great. The head turn is the big plus here.

You have a gorgeous lady here. Don't you just love digital....the exposure latitude has saved my butt more times than I'd care to mention. Excellent detail and the water is fantastic. Another great image.

I'm all for the exposure latitude from my dSLRs. I've done it enough to know how far and for what purpose I can do it if I'm really off. Look at the bright side, you managed to freeze the motion well using 1/1000. :D And you were right, the image was worth saving. :)

Great recovery from a mishap. Looks like you didn't lose much by underexposing the original file. Another fine duck shot. I like Alex's Ms. Calabash nickname, it's killin' me.

Bill,

Nice job salvaging this image. The head turn gives us a great view of the bill. The green water and the reflection are great.

Hey Bill,

Cool shot .. I'd like the bird either higher or lower in the frame.

Cheers

Nice shot. I am glad you were able to rescue it with some help from your software. Exposure latitude and the ability to tweak the exposure as a part of post processing are one of the things that I love about my Canon D60. I also love the turn of the head and the water colors are beautiful.
