Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura)

There is nothing like an indirect even light to bright out the shadows and the detail on the feathers, specially on a dark bird like this, She was almost totally in the shade but for one of her foot that was partially lit by direct sunlight, I knew she won't sit still for long so I went to work quickly since they feel very vulnerable on the ground or when perched low!!, Fill flash was used to bring out a little more detail and colors.

Alex,

A bit tight in the frame but nice and sharp thoughout and a good pose. Well done!

Alex,

Excellent shot. I like how the color of the background complements the brown color in the feathers.

Alex,

Great detail. You mention how vulnerable they feel on the ground and yet at Lake Woodruff NWR every time I go there are up to 30 at a time on the ground and they tolerate me being within 30 feet of them.

A wonderful shot of this species, Alex! I love the tilt of the bird's head but might like the tiniest bit more room on the left hand side of the frame.

A bit tight Alex, but I love the way she's holding out those feathers. You got the exposure to really bring out the detail in the darks. Love the BG, not sure about the perch.

Is that a sparkle in her eye? :D
A lighter brown color than I see up here.
Techs are right on.
Great shot.

Alex,

I'm really enjoying this nice look at the detail in this bird's feathers. Exposure and composition are great as well.

Way cool. 8)

Wow, , great detail! When ever I see one of these they are big black specks in the sky. I agree with Alan that it's a bit tight but the detail present is fantastic.

This is beautiful. I just wish for a bit more room around the tail.

Nice light Alex. It seems that this is the only bird I never have trouble finding in my neighborhood.

Alex, despite the perch this is still one fine looking image. Feathers and face are amazing.
