Coots are great default subjects this time of year. They seem to be everywhere right now. In the last few days I've been working on getting a good flight shot. Was having trouble getting a sharp isolated shot until this guy came screaming by...

If I would have been at f5.6 and ISO 200 that might have frozen the wing motion, any opinions whether this would have been an improvement are welcomed.

Chris,

You did well to get this bird in flight and there is sharp texture throughout. The wing position is good Well done!

I don't know that I've ever seen a coot flight shot. I like this quite a bit. The blurred wings add a nice sense of motion.

An excellent flight shot with your 10D, Chris!
I like the blurred wing too and the blue bg ... won't want to change a thing.

This is really a cool shot. I don't know that I've ever seen a flight shot of one and actually I'm not sure that I've ever really noticed them even flying much. You did a great job....especially using the 10D.

You got excellent wing position and exposure on this. You might second guess it but this is still quite good. And it's exceptional if this is full frame with a 600, a 1.4 on the 10D. :)

Hi Chris, Well done! Why ISO 100 in the first place?

How did you figure your exposure for this one?

Best, Artie

Hi Art,

Can't say I had much of a plan. Usually I shoot at ISO 200 but occasionally I'll try ISO 100 if there's plenty of light. I can't really tell any diff. between 100 and 200 on the 10D.

Shot in Evaluative at -2/3. I was prepared to shoot Osprey flying through the cove with mid-tone backgrounds. Wanted to try and keep the details in the whites. When the coots started taking off I didn't feel like I had time to make any adjustments. It worked out pretty well since the bill didn't get blown out. The detail in the bill is much more obvious on the larger file.

Wish I had a better reason for the exposure but it seems to have worked out.

Any opinions would be appreciated.
