I sort of like the over the shoulder look.
10D, 500IS, fill flash, ISO 400 shot at evaluative meter, no correction.

Steve, I would prefare the over the shoulder look if he was more upright. The steep angle and the tail being OOF makes this a tough one. It looks a bit over exposed to me and the bright hot spots in the BG distract a bit. I like the curve of the perch and the comp is great. I'd also like to see this without the hot spot on the back and the OOF element covering the right foot. Sorry for the tough critque Steve.

I too think the bright highlights in the background are distracting and think the exposure was a bit over. Listen to Alan and keep trying with bird that are a little lower to the ground. :)

Excellent bird!

Sure I have to agree with the others. I know how hard it is to get these kind of images right. I never succeed myself. One thing I'm learning now is to really keep an eye on things in between me and the subject. In this picture as well, this is, for me, the most distracting nit. I could live with the BG.

Sure the exposure could be somewhat less, but I like the bird lighting up at his back.

Cheers

Peter
