Hello all,

Just back from a trip to very rainy Washington state. I went over to the west side of the state last weekend and visisted the Grays Harbor area (A complete washout pretty much due to 40 degree temperatures on Saturday, steady driving rain, and 20+ mile per hour winds), so I ended up driving up to Port Angeles and Olympic National Park area early. I got this shot late Saturday afternoon when a slim ray of sun broke out of the clouds for a few minutes. All rejoiced.

Canon Eos10D + 400mm f/5.6 + 1.4X + 550ex Flash. 1/200th sec @ f/8.0, EV -2/3, Flash EV -1 2/3. He and 7 of his friends (2 females, 5 males) were standing on logs in the bay at Ediz Hook, which incidentally would be even more awesome than it was if I wasn't taking precautions to protect my lens from the rain, and thus had more luxury in where I went. I barely ventured out of my car except for the 5 minutes when I was able to get this shot. There were Harbor Seals all over the place (noses and heads poking up through the water, but none close enough for me to photograph), Pacific and Common Loons, 2 Surf Scoters provided some opportunities but rain and darkness prevailed over those photographs, a multitude of gulls and i'm sure many other possibilities with better weather.

Enjoy,
Chris Fagyal

I have never seen a Harlequin in the Western US - the only one I've ever seen was a non-breeding one in Western Canada - I would have gone nuts with this guy :) A nice shot - could use a bit more USM.

Chris, It sounds like the weather really s___ed. You made the best of the situation. Too bad about the BG.

This is the sweetest pose - he's really standing tall. Great bird and sounds like a very lucky find despite the weather!

I love the pose. Good for you braving the elements to get this excellent shot. :)

I don't mind the BG at all. Looks like the water drops on the belly picked up a bit of the flash. Way to grab a wonderful pose - harlequins are a prize anywhere. Great going! :)

Braving the elements, way to go! Nice catch of this beautiful duck, great colors brought out in the darks.

E.J., you will get your chance for Harlequins in January. :)

Nice image. Exposure is good and the pose of the duck is very nice. Sounds like normal Northwest weather you experienced.

Cool species. I've seen them a couple times in San Diego but no photos.
