This was taken at Lake Morton in downtown Lakeland, FL. This is quite a large lake, but, the wildlife is habituated to people and tolerate a close approach. These swans are there year round.

Shot with my tripod almost flat and about 2 feet above the water level. I purposely cropped out the body because of a distracting second swan and part of the bank. I set out to try ato capture a swan drinking and I think I succeeded. I'd be interested on any thoughts on further croppping from the bottom.Thanks.

10D, 600IS, EV -1 2/3, fill at -1. ISO 200. THe biggest concern I had was the potential for blowing out the white near the tip of the bill.

I love the deep colors and interesting composition. The sparkling water drops on the swan are great! I think this is wonderful.

Great separation for a dark bird against dark water. I would crop it from the bottom to just above the lowest red reflection.
Very nice

It's difficult to show detail in blacks without making things look gray, but you have done it here, and done it very well.

Jim,

Very nice shot. The exposure looks good with plenty of nice detail in the black feathers. I like the green color of the water.

This is an excellent Black Swan. You have so much detail in the black which is hard to get as well as that separation with the dark water. Getting low for this one really was worth it. I think you did an exceptional job. I would try some different cropping, perhaps from the bottom or (I don't know if this would work) maybe as a vertical with just the swan.

Outstanding, Jim. Exposure is letter perfect. I'd crop a tad from below so as to eliminate the lowest bright red reflection.

Excellent job of catching the action. The black swan against the dark bg is tough to separate but you did and did well I might add.

I agree that a slight crop to just above the small red reflection would work. I love the concentric ripples. :)

A very unique and beautiful capture. I don't mind the body being cropped at all, in fact I think it works well for this image the way you've composed it. I think you succeeded, too!

Jim,
Great detail in the feathers. I love this black on almost black image and wouldn't change a thing.
