Alaska Coast near Lake Clark- Silver Salmon lodge- on a close island. I was shooting full body shots when this puffin stretched its wings preparitory to flying off. This is all that fit into the frame. Then woosh and he was gone.

Don't you wish the 1.4x hadn't been on there. It's a nice shot but of course real tight. The wings don't bother me but the toes are too close to the bottom in my opinion.

Thanks,
A little extra space below the feet is under the mount. I have been trying to get full frame mounts from my lab for a long time. I scanned it again and got a little extra space , but cloning alittle extra would be more even better for printing.

Wow this is great. You certainly made the best of the situation. I am certain that it happened very fast. Great shot.

Steve,

Nice shot. The exposure and colors look good. I like the under-wing detail.

Very cute Steve. As others have mentioned a bit tight at the bottom but it still has impact.

Having been so close to them in Alaska and not being able to capture them this well, I just wish this image was mine!!!!, In spite of the minor detractions already mentioned it is a wonderful Puffin no less!!! Congrats!!! 8)

I'd wish for more room at the bottom as well but I'd take this one and never look back. The puffin shots that I have aren't that good and I'd be thrilled if I had just one that showed such great detail. Very nice.

Killer shot under the circumstances. I love the detail. The tightness just adds impact to this fine image. :)

I never tire of puffin shots and this is certainly special. Love the detail and the perfect whites.

Jim,
YOu are right. One can never be ready for everything. Next time I should take three tripods, three 500 or 600mm lenses, set us different situations, aim at the same bird, and keep three remotes ready. Can you imagine how much film plus digital space I can burn with a setup like that? all kidding aside. I frequently do a similar thing, but with 35mm(film or digital) 4x5 plus a med format rotating panoramic. It keeps me hopping. Sometimes it even works.
For air travel, impossible in our current situation.
