I did two conversions from RAW - one that was about a stop lighter than the original exposure, and one unchanged. Then I combined them in PS to bring the dynamic range on the bird into an acceptable balance. Also cloned out a small cattail highlight behind the bird. A touch of saturation and USM and crop - I might try and get a little more separation between the bird's tail and the dark leaf.

Great Shot, beautiful detail and pose. How in heck did you get that close to the little guy.

Tough bird to get close too. Great shot and looks like you getting the most out of it with your PS skills.

Nicely composed shot, Matt. I love the open beak and upturned tail.

Like Ivory soap, 99 and 9/10ths pure. Only minor nit is the dark leaf behind the tail then it is 100%

Matt, a little FF would have helped here in the dark areas of the bird. This would make a strong vertical too. Love that he's singing.

He was right next to the roadway - singing and displaying. He was deep in the cattails most of the time, but for a few moments he hopped up to see who was approaching with a camera (in this case, me).

I like the behavior here a lot - just with that the back and lower part of the tail weren't in shadow.

Matt,

Very nice shot. The singing action and the raised tail are great. Less shadow would be better but I would be happy with it just the way it is.

Good shot of a bird that can be very frustrating to try and photograph. I like his pose.

You did a great job with this one....getting close and the PS. It would be nice not to have the shadows around the tail but this one is so terrific otherwise that I really don't notice it that much.
