Fellow San Diegan Mike Wilson has been suffering from "hunger pains" for the return of the ducks to San Diego. He recently mentioned that the Wood Duck drakes at Santee Lakes were looking good so last Saturday I visited Santee Lakes instead of the La Jolla tide pools. Unfortunately there was a solid overcast. The light was not nice and the water looked terrible, but the drakes did look very nice. How do you capture the beauty of these ducks on day like this? Well, the image below is what I came up with. This one's for you Mike.

The overcast conditions appear to be the ticket for this subject. The high-key makes the image unique.

Very nice!!

A beautiful image, Neil. Not being a fan of high-key BGs, I would have used flash as main light with the ambient underexposed. That's purely a matter of personal taste, however, and you've done extremely well here.

I like high key images and this one is very good. Maybe some fill flash would have given a little more life to the feather color

I like this quite a bit. I do think flash would have helped a bit.

You don't even know what a bad day I had. This is so great to come home to and see. He sure is beautiful. I really like the pose and the super low angle. A very unique duck image. High key is not my favorite but you have done a great job on this one. Thank you.

These duck shots are really amazing.....and making me very impatient for the return of ducks...any ducks around here. I agree with using a little FF but this one is very nice....great detail and pose.

Neil,

Very nice shot. Regardless of the background, this is a beautiful drake in a great pose.
