Castalia Pond, Ohio

Sigma 400 f/5.6 APO Macro HSM, Velvia, Flash, all other info long forgotten...

Castilia Pond in NW Ohio never freezes and is a great place to visit during the winter months! This is another shot taken last winter before I bought my D30. The scan is from Wal-mart and I'm really not yet comfortable with my PS skills with slides. This is a little softer than I would like, smart blur was applied to the BG to eliminate some graininess, and it's cropped ~35%. I can't wait to go back this winter with the D30 and try again. All comments are welcome. Thanks for looking. :)

Very nicely done. I have seen quite a few decent duck images from this location - Brian Zweibel is a big fan of this pond - another thing to visit next time I'm in NW Ohio.

I'm seeing the softness you mentioned but it's very slight. However, the composition and pose are first rate.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you this winter and with the D30. :)

Excellent shot, Laura. I don't see the softness on my monitor.

A beautiful image of one of my favorite ducks. Castalia is to ducks in the winter what Conneaut is to shorebirds in the fall. You did an excellent job with this one as they are not that easy to do with the white. Go get 'em this winter.

This is gorgeous. Looks like you nailed it. I do not see the softness either. Looks very sharp.

Laura,

This is a very nice portrait. It looks like you had some nice light and I like the way you composed the shot.

I'm planning to make it to Castalia quite a few times this winter. Maybe I'll bump into you sometime.

I love these portraits (with so much detail) of such a beautiful duck. I'll have to check out this pond...I am assuming north by Cleveland? ( I am sw) Curious the reason it doesn't freeze must be powerful underground springs???

Laura,

A nice portrait. The breast white area appears to lack detail possibly due to the scan. Velvia has trouble capturing the full range from dark to light and the scan dose not help.

Very nice Laura! I might have lowered the camera jsut slightly unless of course you were thinking cover shot ;). You have produced some great imagery at that pond!

I like the colors and contrast although it is a little soft. :)
