For my first post to NatureScapes.net, I've decided to go with this immature male/female Selasphorus species? hummingbird that I photographed late yesterday afternoon about 8 miles north of my house. Most likely, it's a Rufous Hummingbird but, at this age and in this plumage, it is inseparable in the field from Allen's. Rufous Hummingbirds are rare but regular visitors to Arkansas; some even overwinter. Allen's Hummingbirds have yet to be confirmed in Arkansas. You will never know how much I pleaded for this bird to choose another perch; that vertical stem is a bit of a problem for me but, apart from that, I'm pleased at how well the image turned out.

Camera: Canon D-60 (c'mon 1D update!)
Lens: 500mm f4 IS
Cropping: This is about 70-80 percent of the original frame.
Digital Work: Selective USM (mainly the hummingbird), Levels, and Contrast adjustments.

If this was taken in AR its highly unlikely that it was an Allen's - probably a Rufous and a very nice shot!

This has great appeal to me. Such a tiny, intricate critter and so beautiful.

You could probably use the magic wand tool in PS to reduce the brightness of that stem behind the bird. I might try cropping this to vertical just to see what happens.

Love the color and detail in the hummer - welcome!
