Taken late April 2003. I have many images with an all sand BG and made a point of trying to get images with the ocean as the BG. Fortunately I found this fellow nearer to the ocean than the rest of the colony. The white in the BG is the breaking wave.

10D, 600IS, 1.4x, EV-1, f6.3, no flash, crop from the left.

Comments and reposts welcome.

As others have said, the background puts it a cut above...

Love these Least Terns. This is excellent, especially the exposure of the bird given the BG and white sand.

I especially like this one. The bird is great but it's the BG that really sets this one apart from other tern shots. Excellent.

Jim,

Nice shot. I like the slight head turn and the background is wonderful.

It's been said already but I do love the background. While scrolling up and down I found that I also really like it with just a smidgen of the darkest blue off the top.

Very cool shot. Almost looks like it is standing on dirty snow. Love the bg.
