I think this is a young Broad-winged Hawk, but I'm not sure. Other possibles are juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk and Red-tailed Hawk. If any one knows for sure, please let me know.

Canon's IS technology really impressed me on this shot. I don't think I could have hand held this shot at 1/25th and 900mm without IS.

Jim,

I've never seen a red-tailed hawk in Florida. Sorry I can't help further with the ID. This is a great looking image however.

I don't think I've seen one either, but my Florida bird book says they are here year round.

Jim, I'm also impressed with the sharpness given the techs. Love the bird and the old stump. Great photo.

Lovely shot, Jim. I'd nip a bit from the bottom.

I am no expert on raptors, maybe Jim Zipp will see this, but my amateur opinion is that this is a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk based on the location and some of his features but that's mostly a guess. I do like the photo a lot!

Nice shot, agree on the RSH ID. Amazing that you got an image this sharp, handheld at 1/25th using 900mm. You think the IS works??

Hi Jim,

Nice image!

#1: There are lots of red-tails in FL. This bird is way to slim for red-tail.
#2: Imm. red-shouldered and imm broad-winged are virtually identical. The differences are structural and have to do with tail length vs: wing tips (I think.) Try checking in Sibley. When I get home, I can send this to a few folks and find out for sure. Best, Artie

Jim,

Very nice shot of whatever kind of hawk it is. I like the pose and the background. I think I would try boosting the contrast just a bit.
