Flame-colored Tanager (F)
Piranga bidentata

I had an internal debate over whether or not to post this.  This is a stray migrant who missed her turn in Mexico and ended up on South Padre Island, TX.  A fairly rare occurrence, and a life bird for me.  In facing the mid-day sun, under a sparse canopy providing what could charitably be called "dappled light", I grabbed whatever I could and tried to compensate for the challenging conditions, just hoping to get something half-way decent. Although I had "cleaner" shots later, after a lot of PS, I was really happy with the way this came out.  But I tend to like "moody" shots, and this certainly isn't the typical BOAS (nttawwt!)

The bird looks great in the large view, night and day really. I think it came out great given what you faced.

Given the conditions you did really well here, Craig!
In fact the shadow and lighting give it a dramatic look ...

Stick to your guns and show what you wish Craig. It's your view and it certainly works. Lots of interest in the larger view. Nicely done.

The fact that you observed and photographed this rare migrant, is what's most important. Sunlight streaming through trees, as we know, can create very challenging conditions, but I think this image looks fine, Craig. Your account here, just shows how unpredictable bird photography can be- a pleasant surprise for you, that day !
