This is the first processed image with the new Canon R1.  I decided I wanted to really push the AF so I went to the Canadian Raptor Conservancy in Simcoe and photographed a series of captive raptors.  Photographing these birds while easy in one way .. you have a guaranteed subject and you know the flight path, it is generally more stressful on the AF because you have the bird flying generally right at you.  A subject rapidly closing the focus distance is far more challenging for the AF than a panning shot.  The R1 nailed probably better than 80% of the frames and most of the misses were my fault .. it was cold and gloves were an issue.  The low flight path through the tall wild grasses was never an issue for the AF.  Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to test out the high ISO capabilities but the AF and the FPS exceeded my expectations and I don't care that it's 24 mp's.

A fine image, Malcolm; quite dramatic with the "head on ", pose. I'm certain your will be very satisfied with the performance from your R1. ( I was curious as to which lens you were using for these images)?

Thanks Paul.  I was using my 100-400 F4/5.6.  It's a good lense but I think I would have been happier with either my 300/f2.8 or 500/f4, both of which are faster and sharper but I wanted the flexibility of the zoom and it did come in handy.

Great head-on pose, Malcolm and good to hear that you like the R1, it sounds as if you made the right decision.

I was equally impressed with the AF performance of the R5II when I photographed Terns flying toward me. It seems Canon has made good progress in this regard. Interestingly, I read that someone compared both bodies and had more trouble with the R1 during snowfall and BIF, which surprised me.

Thank you Axel.  Your photos with the R5II have been very impressive and were a big factor in my wanting to upgrade from my old R6 and 5DMII.  It took me a while to choose between the R5MII and the R1 and it would have been nice to own both but that wasn't going to happen.  I think I would have been more than happy with either but the thought of dealing with 45 mp files was the deciding factor for me.  I'll need to head out while it's snowing and see how the AF works.

Marvelous head-on focus, Malcolm. Tack sharp. The eye contact is terrific. Congrats on the new camera.

Excellent incoming flight shot. Good that you chose the camera you like and it works well.
