Thanks Peter and Carol.  I'd got a bit sloppy and rushed the processing on the previous image .  (been a long while since I had to do some selective brightening as per Greg's suggestion,  :?  I'd forgot there is a host of useful tools in PS).

I like this one, too, I particularly how the foliage in the background frames the bird/image.
