Crested Caracaras photographed at the Laguna Seca Ranch in deep south Texas 23 February 2023.

Nikon D7500
Nikon 70-200 f/2.8
1/2500 sec
f/5.6
ISO 1000

The left bird is a juvenile.  There's a small bit of pink on its beak and the beak is transitioning to a yellow color and its feathers are getting darker.  The right bird is a sub-adult.  The feathers are mostly dark, and the beak is transitioning from yellow to orange.

Looks better viewed large.

Brilliant interaction as they establish pecking rights.  Nice one Gene.  Are these the same two that were at each other a month later Gene?

David,
At times, 50 or more Caracaras can be at the Raptor area.  So, the interaction typically involves different birds.  These are not the same birds that are in the last post.

Great moment and interaction captured here. Must be fun to have so many Caracaras in one place.

Thanks for that Gene.  Just wondered whether those two have an ongoing issue with each other or whether its a normal thing for these birds to get feisty with each other. (guess its the latter...  :D)

These birds certainly don't seem too tolerant of their fellow species, Gene. While I prefer your previous image - which was superb, this is also a fine capture of the interaction.
