Nikon D850, Zeiss 25mm F 2.0
ISO 500, 1/80s, F7.1, Tripod This will be the last of the series of my encounter with a Black-backed Woodpecker. This image of the nest was captured the day after they fledged. Except for being as low as it was, it is a typical nest as this type of woodpecker almost always peels bark away from the excavation site and always makes a beveled bottom to the entry. This presumably makes it easier to keep a toe hold since they only have three toes. The image had to be taken with a wide angle lens to get in front of all the branches that would otherwise clutter the view. Although I was initially disappointed to be forced to use a wide angle on this image, in the end I found it effective to show the bird's habitat. Moderators, if possible please keep this in the bird gallery since it's part of the series. Please click for higher resolution. |
