This will be the last of the series of my encounter with a Black-backed Woodpecker.  This image of the nest was captured the day after they fledged. Except for being as low as it was, it is a typical nest as this type of woodpecker almost always peels bark away from the excavation site and always makes a beveled bottom to the entry.  This presumably makes it easier to keep a toe hold since they only have three toes.

The image had to be taken with a wide angle lens to get in front of all the branches that would otherwise clutter the view. Although I was initially disappointed to be forced to use a wide angle on this image, in the end I found it effective to show the bird's habitat.

Moderators, if possible please keep this in the bird gallery since it's part of the series.

It can definitely stay here Warren, its a vital part of the story and a nice illustration of their chosen habitat for the nest site.

Something different, but most appropriate in conjunction with your Woodpecker series, Warren.

Nice illustration of their nesting hole-a fine ending to a wonderful story. Write a book!

Thanks for sharing this series, great find and nice that the nest was almost at eye level.
