I photographed this male Golden Winged Warbler several years ago towards the end of Spring migration.  In this image he was flitting from branch to branch, in true Warbler fashion, in search for food. He hesitated just for a moment by hanging upside down before heading to a nearby branch.

It should be noted that this specimen has a background where one of its ancestral family members had mated with a Blue Winged Warbler. The slight yellow wash on it's upper chest is a clear indication.

This one is way up there with my favourites of your warbler images, Warren! I love the content, wonderful upside down pose, and superb detail. Beautifully done!

Excellent shot-love the wonderful hanging pose. Thanks for the story too. Is he is a hybrid then?

Not a full fledged hybrid like the Lawrence's or the Brewster's Warblers but in his background there is history of interbreeding between his family of Golden Wings and probably one breeding with a Blue Wing. He is still very much considered a Golden Winged Warbler since he carries all of the classic markings. There are many variables where these birds' breeding locations overlap, with the Blue Wing apparently being the dominant species.

Very much appreciate the EP, especially for an image of this species. For many years they were more than a nemesis bird to me, they were like a mythical image. After exploring areas on the US side of the St Lawrence River valley and areas of far western Vermont I learned that the Golden Winged Warbler is like any other bird that if given suitable habitat they are likely to be found. Thank you again for the EP.
