The Oystercatcher was a target bird on my recent trip to southern NJ.  Due to the high winds their preferred hunting grounds were covered with water even at low tide.  This pair decided to ride out the conditions on the leeward side of a causeway but had to stay in the shallow water or be forced to the shoulder of the road.

My six year old grandson related the Oystercatcher was his favorite bird images from my trip, so I'm showing this image here, lol.

Great that your grandson likes them, too. They are attractive-looking birds.

That's a great reason to post them! I am enjoying images like this with 2 birds in the same pose, with one sharp and the other not. Really a pleasing composition. The bright colors of the bills and eyes don't hurt either in the otherwise rather dull color scheme.

I like oystercatchers too, and the symmetry in this one is a lovely bonus with this pair, Warren. I think your grandson is developing a good eye!

Nice in habitat image.
I vaguely recall that the female's pupil is not round but elongated. Maybe they both are males.

Karl, your guess on that is better then mine.  I was out of my element shooting some of the birds in southern NJ including Oystercatchers. I'll look this up, but I believe the male is just a bit richer in color. Not sure about this pair of birds.
