Black-necked Stilt female with young
Gilbert, Arizona
D500, 500mm, 1/500, f/9, ISO2000

The stilts moved their family to a different spot, with much closer access.  When she came to brood the chicks I had to back up since I couldn't zoom out.  The stilts in this location are quite habituated and often come within min focus distance if I'm sitting quietly, but I was still surprised that she would come so close with the chicks.  Maybe my presence helped deter the Grackles and other birds from coming.

Great intimate mood and nice problem to have if they get too close. I had similar experiences with Oystercatchers. When I sat around for a good amount of time, they didn't mind my presence and even 'left' the chick with me and went to look for food, I felt like an honorary babysitter. :)
