I found an abundance of red crossbills in one conifer forested region of NY's Adirondacks yesterday, and captured this photo.  It was not easy. Gritting in the road at times, they fly up high in the treetops if approached. This almost eye level shot was of a male on his return down.  Canon R5 and EF 500mm F4

A fine image, Jeff- the perch with the snow, is excellent, and really highlights the photo.

It was worth the effort, this is really nice. Great angle to appreciate that crossed bill. The snow capped branch gives a lot of context and story to the image.

Great opportunity and image. I only have substandard images of this species.

Super capture Jeff. Love the perch and as you say, they are often in the tree tops so great opportunity taken.

Nice look at the beak of this male Red Crossbill on a terrific looking branch. Although I didn't see you I think we may have been on the same series of roads on the same morning. Your description of their behavior is perfect as they are so close but yet so far away for a nice image like this one of yours.

Excellent view of that cone stripping crossbill, Jeff. The dusting of snow and lichen on the perch add the finishing touches to this fine image.
