Taken a few years ago during an irruption year which brought some Great Grey Owls to northern Upstate NY. This one was sleeping in this tree for at least the 2 hours I waited for it to begin hunting in late afternoon.  Moments after it woke up he seemed to sense prey nearby and crashed into the snow but came up empty. A bit later he did catch a vole but behind some brush where a good photo of it with prey was not possible.

My friends have said it perfectly, Warren and I agree on all points. Beautifully done, and I love the furry boots!

Excellent action shot.
Years ago I followed one on its hunting trip all day with the help of a local who knew its schedule.
He asked me to send him some pictures that I did.

I actually didn't know what to expect when he woke up. I hoped to get a few nice portraits but he only stayed in the tree for a minute before missing his first opportunity at prey, and then flying to another tree before getting a vole in some tall grass and briars and then heading to the edge of some nearby woods.  I checked my camera and saw I had some good shots so I went back to my car and warmed up.  Worth the wait.

A wonderful image, Warren, of certainly an uncommon species, captured at a special moment.
