I was there eight minutes after sunrise and he was calling already. Unfortunately the Sun remained behind clouds and my auto ISO went to 12800 at f9.0 and 1/400 s.
I went back one and a half hours later and set the ISO to 2000.
This is one of the images.

Like your thinking Karl.  Super shot with a beautiful warm bg rounded off by excellent details in this youngster.  I'm good with auto Iso but if light levels not good, would rather set my own and trade that against lower ss.  hey ho..
Make your life spectacular!

Another beauty of this juvenile woodpecker. Like David, I don't mess around with auto ISO when light levels are not good. I would rather go manual once I find the best setting whenever possible. In any event this is a wonderful image with terrific detail and nice complimentary background.

Details look great, as does the background. I may have tried framing with the bird a bit lower.

Thank you all. I also much prefer full manual setting most of the time as David and you and most of us do.
However, sometimes Auto ISO is a better choice IMO when a little bird for example is moving around in and out of a dark and a light area such as bottom of a tree trunk and next up on a branch against the sky. :) Most of the time I don't really like auto ISO.

You certainly made the right choice here! Gorgeous detail-love seeing the bits of red emerging on his head. Congrats!
