Nikon D 850, Nikon 500mm F5.6 pf
ISO 640, 1/1,000s, F6.3

This image was taken earlier this year on a cold windy day.  It was my first opportunity to photograph this type of merganser at close range. When seen live he looks to be a wild looking bird partially due to it's bad hair day and serrated beak.
I wrestled a bit with keeping the image straight but no matter how I turned it something always appeared off .  This is the final result.

Nice looking image turning his head sideways for you. The fastest flying Waterbird, that is. I hope to shoot them in flight soon.

Sweet capture of this handsome fellow! It's always a treat to be able to spend some time with this species.

a great head-on shot and I like the way you captured the hair-do on this merganser, the angle works well WARREN.

A lovely view of this drake, so full of character and looks level enough to me, Warren.

An excellent image, with a great head-turned pose, which shows the colours, and the crest so well. The water has a cold look to it, as well, which matches your description of the weather that day.

Lucky you to see this one so close! Wonderful shot with that nice head turn. They are extremely rare here-love their jaunty looks.
