This is the pose of the Victoria's Riflebird (Lophorina victoriae) Ptiloris victoriae when making his loud calls in the mating season. The yellow inside the mouth is the most obvious, but he also fluffs up the green feathers on the lower abdomen. He doesn't fan the wings when calling, but if the female appears and he claps the wings he will open the bill fully while pointing upwards. This is a different individual to the one I posted yesterday, this one was relatively close to a 4WD track, but this display perch came down in the last wet season, so the other one is a 2km walk with the gear... Easy to hear, not to photograph.

Another fascinating view of this amazing species, Greg. The extent to which they can open that 'gape' is quite mind boggling! Great image.

Impressive! That yellow gape is like a spot of sunshine beckoning the female. It is a bit dark, but I suppose their environment truly is that dark.

Bet that your heart was beating out of your chest when he finally opened his mouth and you released the shutter. Very cool.
