If you have ever seen a David Attenborough program on the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland, the sound you will always hear repeated is the call of the Victoria's Riflebird (Lophorina victoriae) Ptiloris victoriae. It is breeding season now, so it is actually quite prevalent for the next month or two. The male uses the same display perches season after season. He does his call, and if the female appears he will do his big wing fan display. This was just exercise, no female... Crazy iridescence in the plumage, it helps to bring it out with flash in the dark rainforest. The image may take a bit to understand, he is facing away at 45 degrees with a full wing display. The bill is fully open, the yellow line you might see on the curve next to the eye is the edge of the yellow inside the bill. I can post another front on image (probably sans wing display) later for context. Hopefully I will get a better one of this project.

An awesome capture of this display! The explanation about the yellow bill makes it even more fascinating. Hope you keep getting to observe and photograph the activity for a while longer.

Certainly, a sight that not too many have witnessed, but to photograph it, is very special, Greg!

Remarkable shot and display- how fortunate to be able to see this for real- have enjoyed Attenborough but thought it must be very hard to witness these displays. Fabulous.
