Fulmar Prion
Bounty Island, New Zealand

Prions are southern ocean tube-noses that are known for the distinctive black "M" marking across the wings and back.  Apparently that is a form of camouflage, breaking up the outline of the bird against the ocean.  The wingspan of this species is 60cm / 24 inches.
They nest on Bounty Islands and there were many of them coming and going as we cruised the island.

I don't remember seeing an image of this Fulmar species before, thanks for sharing. The pattern looks really cool, as for camouflage, are there predators going after them?

The color of the bird would seem to be effective camouflage with the sea and sky. Very pretty.

From what I can find (and imagine), the predators at sea would be other birds- skuas, perhaps some of the larger petrels.  There are threats in the water - orca for example- but the wing pattern wouldn't help there- that's why most sea birds are pale on the belly, it hides them from predators below.
