Eastern Rockhopper
Auckland Islands, New Zealand
Nikon D850, 80-400 @400mm, 1/250, f/5.6, ISO2000

Not the type of setting most people expect for a penguin, but very typical of the New Zealand Subantarctic islands where many species are found.  The pink border around the bill differentiates this subspecies from the one on the Falklands.
This was in deep shade in the early morning, handheld from a zodiac.

Gorgeous setting Cindy! The moss and lichens add a great deal. Can see from this how they got their name. Nicely done.

Beautifully framed by the surrounding natural elements in its habitat, Cindy! A lovely image.

it's a small view of the penguin but I like the whole setting of this image, well documented CINDY.

Certainly not the setting I would expect to find a penguin. The root system with the moss covering the roots and the rocks makes for a wonderful setting and framing of the Rockhopper. Terrific environmental setting for this interesting bird.

Nice image, and a good illustration of the sub-antarctic habitat.

Great composition and quite an unusual habitat for penguins.
