This is a male Northern Paula Warbler in Spring breeding plumage. It is the smallest of the warblers found in the eastern US and can often be found in conjunction with Unsea lichen which is similar to Spanish moss. This warbler often builds it's nest either with or in this hanging lichen which normally grows in wet or boreal type evergreen habitat.

This particular image was taken when the sun was already a bit too harsh, only a couple of hours after sunrise, but the natural perch made it an easy decision to shoot it when the opportunity presented itself.

Coming from a place where the light is almost always harsh- this doesn't look harsh to me!! :-) Love the perch, so much character. Sweet pose as well. Another warbler that we sometimes have over-winter, when the plumage is not nearly as bright.

A lovely view of this little beauty, and the lichen covered perch adds so much to the image, Warren.
