Nesting season on our beaches is coming to an end. Most birds have fledged, the least tern chicks are big but still waiting for parents to feed them. Common terns don't nest on the local beach that I go to but visit often just before the fall migration starts. Today was the first time I saw a juvenile common tern on our beach. There were two of them. But this one, in particular, was in a very playful mood. This young bird picked up a small shell on the beach and was tossing it around. As waves came in, the bird would fly up as if he or she didn't want to get wet. I caught this moment when the bird dropped the shell as a big wave came in... What a wonderful morning - worth getting up at 3am and driving 90 mins to this location. Looking forward to your thoughts, constructive criticism, suggestions et al.
