This was an interesting moment as the two adult loons had abandoned the chick for nearly 20 minutes as, almost out of nowhere, over a 10 minute period, a group of about a dozen adult loons landed on the lake. The two parent adults seemed to want to get into the fray of chasing each other around for a while before they all dispersed.  When the female adult returned to the chick she came right up to it as if to comfort it, as seen in this image. It was probably a coincidence but I thought it was worth noting, and fortunately documenting with this shot.

Lovely capture of a lovely moment. In my opinion, the parents might have "joined the fray" to distract the invaders from discovering their chick. I have seen some nasty behavior amongst loons in this regard. I'm glad junior was safe!

That's very possible Cynthia.  I was going to go with the adults to try and get some interaction shots but I decided to stay near the chick as it just looked very vulnerable at that moment. In any event, things worked out well for all concerned.
