This is quite exceptional! Love the wing spread and extended feet. I hope the landing wasn't too painful, looking at those spikes! (Or was it taking off?)

Cool wing position and I really like the head turn in this one.

Cynthia, It was taking off.  The spikes are sharp and there's lots of them, but the birds can easily land between the spikes and the spikes are not even a consideration when birds land.  What's curious is how Woodpeckers and Thrashers will land on the smaller, very sharp, cactus barbs and pay no attention to them.  The nickname for this particular cactus is "Horse Crippler" because the cactus are close to the ground and the spikes are very strong and can lame a horse.

Excellent composition with wonderful body position, wing position, detail, color, and background. South Texas appears to be the place to go to catch birds like this. Someday I will make it there. I had a trip planned to Santa Clara Ranch but it was canceled because of the pandemic.

Excellent action capture, Gene! This reminds me of a human ascending with a jet pack on their back!
