Common Name: Greater Spotted Eagle
Binomial Name : Clanga Clanga (Pallas, 1811) Family: Accipitridae, Class: Aves IUCN Conservation Status: Vulnerable (Threatened as IUCN 3.1 Red List) Status in Birbhum, WB, India: Migratory Click @ Outskirts of Bolpur Santiniketan, West Bengal, India Greater spotted eagles hunt in flight, from a perch, or by stalking their prey on the ground. They are also known to be kleptoparasites, stealing the prey of other raptors. They mainly feed on small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, water-birds, fish, insects, and carrion. Pairs engage in courtship displays, which include loud calling, circling, and soaring to great heights followed by the male diving towards the female.
This species has a small population which appears to be declining owing to extensive habitat loss and persistent persecution. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable.
