Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher

The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (aka Black-backed Kingfisher) is resident to the Indian Subcontinent and SE Asia.

They breed in July- August during the rains. The nest is a hollowed-out cavity in a vertical soft mud wall. The eggs hatch in 17 days and the hatchlings fledge in 20. In this 20 day period both parents spend the whole day feeding the young ones with progressively larger prey. They feed on reptiles, insects and fish and pretty much any animal life of that size.

What we're seeing here is a 2/3 second pause on a perch close to the nest, for a quick predator check, before the bird enters the nest to feed.

You should have titled this the same as my most recent post.....'a mouthful".  Fantastic detail and striking color. This is really a wonderful image of a beautiful bird with good descriptive information giving context to what is being seen.  Well done.
