When I took this image, I believed that I had just seen a Northern Harrier. It wasn't until later when I got home and put my images on the computer that I realized that wasn't the case. It was my first time seeing a dark red-tailed, so I was pretty happy to get this shot.

Very nice head on shot with terrific eye contact. I have a question.......are you sure this is not a dark morphed Rough-legged Hawk ?? Either way, a very nice image.

Thank you! I'm certainly not a hawk expert and was going by the lack of the dark band on the tail and from the discussions that I had with others regarding ID. Is there a trait that you see that makes you believe it's a Rough-legged? I appreciate your thoughts!

Thank you! I'm certainly not a hawk expert, so it very well could be a Rough-legged! I was going by the lack of the dark band on the tail and from the discussions that I had with others regarding ID. Hi Amy,

I just sent you a private message regarding your question.  When I subsequently went back to your image it occurred to me that you are from Ontario which makes it even more likely, in my opinion, that it is quite possibly a rough legged hawk. Hope you get to see my private message with my thoughts.
