Looks can be deceiving.  This Common Loon is not calling, but is actually panting on a very warm, early morning during last year's Spring on a small Adirondack lake.  The bird and it's call is one of the most iconic sights and sounds in the Adirondacks.

Loons have always been a favorite species to photograph and observe, and your image here, Warren, is an excellent portrayal ,
of this iconic species. Great lighting and detail in this image, plus the open bill, is a nice " extra ".
The greenish colour to the water, is a nice element of contrast in the photo, as well.

I love to hear their haunting call floating across the water, a beautiful sound. They are very flighty over here (I've only seen them in Scotland) and not easy to get anywhere near them, but you got a lovely view of this one, Warren!

I heard them on our lake just the other morning, most soothing sound ever! Beautiful image, I never knew they panted!
