The pelican really stands out against the dark background-excellent contrast and lighting. I really like this-looks like a book illustration. :) And, by the way, welcome to NSN.

I agree with the other comments regarding the low level view, but in addition what caught my attention is his yellow ringed eye. Very nice image.

I love this portrait.
The details of the pelican are so well defined that it seems almost drawn,
while the background so dark contrasts well with the color of the subject making it stand out perfectly.
