It is very rare to get one of these tiny owls out in the open so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to photograph this beautiful bird while it roosted near those dead leaves. I have been lucky enough to see many of them over the years but every other time I have ever seen them they were perched in dense pines or holly trees. Hope you enjoy the image as much as I did taking the photo.

I am certainly enjoying your image very much, Isaac! It's a great feeling, when you finally get the photo
you have been thinking about for a long time!

A great example of the ability of the Saw-whet to camouflage itself amongst the leaves, snow and tree bark. And a first-rate image as well. Well done, Isaac!

Yes behind the bird was a frozen river and a bunch of dense sticks and stuff. It was amazing how easy it was to completely miss it and how well the streaks of the belly blended in with the vertical streaks of the sticks in the background.

Wonderful capture Isaac. The colors are perfect and I really like the scowling look.

It's always great to get a subject that's always been on your to do list. Owls are usually one of these and this image of the Saw-whet is both unusual and beautiful in the context of the overall image. Congrats on a terrific shot.
