Bittern in Flight

Nikon D810, Nikon 200mm f4.0 macro
ISO 400, 1/1600s, F 6.3

An American Bittern in flight in it's home environment. As is obvious from my lens I was not attempting this image. Not totally sharp in the head area but close given the old technology of this macro lens. I was doing some macro work when I saw the Bittern flying from a distance that allowed enough time to focus on him as he flew to a different part of the swamp.

WoW! May not have been the intended image but the whole image, including the habitat gels and tells more of a story than the more atypical 500 focal length and blurred bg shot. Like it!!!!!

I agree with your point. From my standpoint,at least where it's possible, I prefer to include the bird's natural habitat. Sometimes it appears a bit messy but if that's where a species lives then it's OK with me.

Getting one of these elusive birds in flight is no mean feat, Warren! Lovely in habitat flight capture and great stuff with the macro lens. I love to see these habitat shots, tells so much more than a bland featureless background.
