I was spending the morning photographing a group of about 30 Savannah Sparrows that were gathered in a small area.   The birds all flushed and I quickly noticed why.  This Merlin had attacked and was able to get one of the sparrows.   I was lucky to be able to get the camera on the Merlin as he flew within 20ft of me at eye level.  This is my favorite of the sequence.   Notice the sparrow grabbing the Merlin's talons.  Fighting to the end.    Nikon D5, 500mm f5.6PF lens

Terrific action image with top notch detail. Great image especially in light of the circumstances. In this case "luck" always seems to come to those who are prepared. Well done.

Amazing capture. I feel bad when I see critters get picked off by predators, but they have to eat too!
